Hyvä Checkout and an Unsupported PSP? How XTAND Integrates SystemPay
Your payment service provider doesn’t have a Hyvä Checkout module? That’s not a blocker - it’s an integration project.
The Context: Magequip.com Runs on Hyvä Checkout
Magequip.com is a B2B e-commerce site specializing in professional equipment, running on Magento 2 with the Hyvä theme and Hyvä Checkout to deliver a checkout experience that matches the frontend: fast, clean and modern.
One catch, though: the PSP in use is SystemPay, the payment platform developed by Lyra for several French banks (Banque Populaire, Caisse d’Epargne, among others). As of today, there is no ready-made SystemPay module for Hyvä Checkout. That said, many payment services are already supported out of the box (PayPlug, Mollie, Worldline, Adyen, Stripe, PayPal, etc. - full list).
For many merchants, this is where the project stalls. Not at XTAND.
Why the Absence of a Hyvä Module Is Not a Problem
The Hyvä Checkout module ecosystem is still maturing. Not every PSP has a dedicated module yet. But that absolutely does not mean integration is impossible.
Why? Because virtually all payment providers (including Lyra/SystemPay) now expose solid, well-documented and maintained APIs. These APIs allow an integrator with deep knowledge of the Hyvä architecture to build a custom integration that is clean, performant and fully maintainable. Even better: where off-the-shelf modules offer basic features, a custom integration lets you leverage the full capabilities of your PSP.
This is precisely the philosophy behind Hyvä Checkout: an open, modern architecture designed to interface easily with third-party services via their APIs, without depending on a catalog of pre-packaged modules.
What We Built on Magequip
The project covered several key areas:
Checkout Design Overhaul
Migrating to Hyvä Checkout had already enabled a complete redesign of the checkout flow. Gone are the heavy multi-step pages and slow loads: the Magequip checkout is now fluid, intuitive and fast, fully consistent with the Hyvä experience across the rest of the site.
Native SystemPay Integration
The SystemPay integration was built directly on top of the Lyra APIs:
- Integration of the Smartform (payment form in embedded mode) directly within the checkout, providing a seamless card entry experience with no redirect.
- Proper handling of payment callbacks (success, failure/cancellation, pending) fully integrated into the Magento order flow.
Improved Payment Circuit
Beyond mere Hyvä compatibility, the project was an opportunity to improve the overall payment behavior compared to the standard Lyra/SystemPay module. Error handling, callback reliability, user experience on failure - all of these were reworked to deliver a more robust experience than the original module.
